ALWAYS WORK HARD NEVER GIVE UP AND FIGHT UNTIL THE END

THE ZERO TO HERO JOURNEY

The Backyard Shed

Michael started with retail arbitrage – buying low, selling high online. He compartmentalized his inventory based on marketplace, working out of his backyard shed. Unlike most entrepreneurs who start with physical stores and add e-commerce, Michael did the reverse.

The "Death Pile" Problem

As his online business grew, so did his "death pile" – inventory that was difficult to sell online. Instead of seeing this as a problem, Michael identified an opportunity: a physical retail location with a unique pricing model.

The First Store

Michael and his wife Jen opened The Bin Store at 401 W. Martintown Road in North Augusta, SC. Their innovative sliding price model (starting at $6 on "restock days" and decreasing throughout the week) created both urgency and accessibility.

Empire Expansion

Success led to rapid expansion. Michael established "Bin Store Brands" as a parent company, with separate entities for each store and the pallet business. Today, The Bin Store operates multiple locations across South Carolina and Georgia, employing over 60 people.

THE VALUE PROPOSITION BREAKDOWN

FOR SUPPLIERS

Easy disposal of customer returns that would otherwise create logistical challenges and eat into margins

FOR CUSTOMERS

Access to name-brand products at extreme discounts, with the thrill of potentially finding high-value items (PlayStation 5, Dyson Airwrap,Apple)

FOR THE COMMUNITY

Donations of unsold merchandise to charitable organizations, plus affordable shopping options for families on tight budgets

THE $90 BILLION PROBLEM
HE TURNED INTO AN OPPORTUNITY

The e-commerce return rate hovers at 20-30%. Retailers can't profitably process these returns.

For many retailers, it's more cost-effective to liquidate returns in bulk than to individually process them.

Michael Prendamano saw what everyone else missed: A golden opportunity to build a retail empire on other people's "problems."

"Online retailers could, and do, resell returned items. But they're often loath to do that because it can cannibalize the sale of brand-new products."

5 KEY LESSONS FROM MICHAEL'S SUCCESS

1. FIND VALUE WHERE OTHERS SEE WASTE

Michael built his empire on the "problems" of online retailers. The entire business model is predicated on turning one company's inefficiency into another's profit center.

2. SIMPLE PRICING CREATES SCALABLE OPERATIONS

Rather than individually pricing thousands of items, Michael's fixed-price model reduces operational complexity while creating a dynamic shopping experience.

3. STRUCTURE YOUR BUSINESS FOR EXPANSION

Creating separate entities for each store and running weekly P&Ls demonstrates Michael's focus on sustainable growth and financial clarity.

4. CREATE AN EXPERIENCE, NOT JUST A STORE

The "treasure hunt" aspect has transformed shopping into an exciting activity that keeps customers returning frequently and spreading word-of-mouth.

5. BUILD MULTIPLE REVENUE STREAMS

Beyond retail operations, Michael maintained the wholesale pallet business, creating diversified income that provides stability and growth opportunities.
